Custom software,
built to fit.
When off-the-shelf tools don't fit how you actually work — or can't meet your confidentiality requirements — we design and build the software that does.
When custom software is the right answer
Most businesses should buy software rather than build it, and we'll tell you so if that's the case. Custom becomes the right call in a few specific situations: when your process is genuinely different from what every product assumes; when you're paying for several tools and still doing the important part in a spreadsheet; when per-seat licensing has outgrown the value it delivers; or when the data simply cannot live on someone else's servers.
That last one comes up more than people expect — practices handling confidential client records, firms under contractual data restrictions, and businesses that have decided a cloud subscription is an unacceptable dependency for their most sensitive information.
What we build
- Desktop applications — native macOS and Windows apps that run locally
- Internal tools — the dashboard or admin panel your team actually needs
- Web applications — portals, booking systems, client-facing tools
- Local-first & encrypted systems — for records that can't go to the cloud
- Ordering & scheduling platforms — with inventory, capacity, and admin built in
- Integrations — connecting systems that were never designed to talk
A real build: Mudrashram Ledger
A practitioner in Miami needed to track confidential client sessions across a growing practice. Every off-the-shelf option — CRMs, note apps, practice management SaaS — required trusting a third-party cloud with deeply personal records. For that practice, this was a non-starter.
We built Mudrashram Ledger: a local-first desktop application with no backend at all. The entire data layer is an AES-256 encrypted database that lives on the practitioner's own machine. There is no server to breach, no subscription dependency, and no vendor — including us — who can read the data. Going local-first created two hard problems that cloud apps solve for free, so we solved both: an offline recovery key system for a lost password, and encrypted backup and restore for a lost machine.
How we approach a custom build
We start by pushing back. The first job is to establish whether you actually need custom software, because the cheapest project is the one you don't have to build. If an existing tool can do the job, we'll say so — and if automation connecting tools you already own would solve it, that's usually faster and cheaper than building.
When a build is justified, we scope it to the smallest thing that solves the real problem, then ship that. Security-critical paths — encryption, file handling, data access — get built with the appropriate rigor rather than the fastest available shortcut. You get the source, the documentation, and a delivery path that doesn't depend on us being around.
How much does custom software cost?
More than a website, and it varies enormously with scope — which is why we quote a fixed price only after understanding what you actually need. The first conversation is free, and it's often where we establish that a smaller build (or no build) will do. See our pricing approach.
Can you build something that keeps data off the cloud?
Yes — that's a specialty. Mudrashram Ledger stores everything in an encrypted database on the user's own device, with no server anywhere in the architecture. If confidentiality is your binding constraint, say so early and we'll design around it.
Do we own the software you build?
Yes. You own the software and the accounts it depends on, and you get documentation at handoff. Nothing is held hostage.
What if we're not sure whether we need custom?
That's the normal starting point, and it's exactly what the free call is for. We'd rather tell you honestly that an existing tool solves your problem than sell you a build you didn't need.
